Plans have changed a lot during our travels and we’re enjoying improvising for the most part and letting other travelers and our intuition guide the way.
The one place all travelers agreed we couldn’t miss was Colombia. Vast green lush valleys, the highest palm trees on earth and Arabian coffee farms are all found in the Colombian “Eje cafetero”.

Medellín used to be the most dangerous city on earth and it’s incredible how in the past 15 years it has worked hard to transform itself into the modern city it is today. You can even visit neighborhoods, like Comuna 13, which some years ago were struck by continous violence and learn about their history and transformation.

Up in the Caribbean, Cartagena de Indias is probably the most beautiful and photogenic colonial town we’ve seen so far. Colorful buildings with beautiful balconies surround the old town. It was so hot we couldn’t even be outside during the day but we loved strolling around Getsemaní in the evening and having some cold beers in the lively Plaza Trinidad.

Escaping the heat we went up the mountains to the peaceful haven of Minca. Staying at a coffee and cacao finca lost in the green mountains with no Internet was a treat. I’ve never seen so many different types of butterflies in my life.
Also, reading Cien años de soledad in the porch hammock with the pouring rain outside in the evening was pure bliss. And hands down, the best organic homemade raw cacao I’ve tried was here, in Finca San Rafael.

It was really cool to run into our friends Alex & Alvar throughout the Colombian trip, we spent a lot of fun times together—, hiking Tayrona Park, Climing El Peñon in Guatapé and we even saw a replica of La Moreneta on September 11th (Diada Nacional de Catalunya) in Bogotá.

Your pictures and commentary are just great!! I’m so happy that you have the chance to witness such beauty.
