Corriendo olas in the north coast of Perú

With new boards in hand we took off north following the coast aiming to find different surf spots. Huanchaco was a small little coast town known for its caballitos de totora, the first version of the modern surfboard. It is thought that surfing started in Peru when fishermen went out to fish on the reed boats and caught waves on the way back to shore with these reed canoes.

Next stop was the famous longest left wave in the world found in Puerto Malabrigo aka Chicama. We had never seen anything like it—it’s like a perfect wave factory, where you can see the long lines rolling in one after the other endlessly.

But the place that stole our hearts and the one we stayed the longest was Lobitos. This modest town is not the easiest to access and has very few comodities such as groceries or restaurants. The scenery is both beautiful and degrading. There’s an oil drilling plant right next to town and you can see all the offshore drilling platforms along the horizon. It’s such a contrast to see surfers riding perfect waves in beautiful beaches with the constant reminder that fossil fuels are destroying our planet. There are three main surf spots, Punta Lobitos, Piscinas and Baterías where we enjoyed catching waves.

We stayed at La Vista Eco-Lodge, where Diego and his two dogs, Gerónimo and Sino, made us feel like home while we shared meals and night conversations. The view from his place is unbeatable and the peace and calm of having nothing else to do than surf (and demolish books) was exactly what we went looking for.

We met other lovely guests and I enjoyed teaching yoga to all of them with a beachfront view. Really gonna miss this place, Lobitos was the best ❤

Oh! And did I mention I had the best Ceviche EVER?!
