COLONIAL HERITAGE IN POTOSI, SUCRE & LA PAZ

Following our road trip northbound through Bolivia we stopped at the colonial towns of Potosí and Sucre, each one of them with its own charm, until we arrived to the big city of La Paz.

A long bus ride took us from Uyuni to Potosí, driving through infinite landscapes, between colorful mountains, contemplating how vast the Bolivian Altiplano is.

Potosí is one of the highest cities in the world at 4,090 meters. Not easy to forget when you try to walk up some stairs at a faster pace. Also, uncountable small buses are constantly circulating through the narrow streets and being so contaminating which could even be asphyxiating at some points. Lots of people walking around, permanent heavy traffic and a very narrow Spanish colonial city plan made the city feel a bit too crowded for a pleasant stay so we quickly headed to Sucre, which based on our experience was a whole different story.

Sucre was the foundational capital of Bolivia and its charming streets, white, beautiful colonial architecture and markets make it a place you want to stay for a while and relax. We really liked having lunch at the market, trying the amazing chocolate varieties and enjoying the views with fellow travelers from La Recoleta, one of the highest parts of the city.

We took an overnight bus to La Paz, also known as the highest capital of the world. This city is very very very busy but we quite enjoyed melting into the crowds, walking through the many old colonial plazas and specially hopping onto the brand new telepheric up to Los Altos. The panoramic views from up there and sincerely jaw-dropping, with the impressive triple-peaked Mount Illimani in the background, a 6,430 meters giant that can be seen from many parts of the city. Certainly one of the highest mountains we’ve ever seen.

  1. Yeah ok. Stop posting pictures, because I am sitting here at my desk on Results Way and not doing what you two are, so I’m mad. Also, get a haircut hippy.

    🙂
